We were visited today by one my commute cribbage buddies, Richard Moor. Richard and I play cribbage fairly frequently on the ferry ride home from work. He is a fine cribbage player, and it was fun having him play in our tournament today! KAREN KEIL wins today's cribbage tournament and moves up in the rankings. JIM RANSTROM finishes in second place. RAY MIELBRECHT comes in third and also moved up in the rankings. JIM RANSTROM scored the FIRST 24-HAND (and $5), but lost THE CHICKEN to Cindy, who gave it over to visitor Richard Moor, who kindly returned it to Jim. Nobody claimed the DIRECTOR'S AWARD (4-of-a-Kind), selected by Ray, so that prize DOUBLES to $10 next week. And nobody scored a RAGGEDY JULIA today. Nine people entered into this pot today, so the pot starts out with $22 next week! PUZZLER OF THE WEEK Ray asked me how many different ways are there to score a 23 point hand. Well, according to cribbage guru Ras Rasmusson, there are only two ways in which 23 points can be scored. Those hands are: 4 5-5-5-6 = 23 points (15 for 8 + triple run for 15) 5H 5.5.J JH = 23 points (15 for 14, 3 of a kind for 6, pair for 2 & nobs)

CONGRATULATIONS to RAY MIELBRECHT! Once again Ray finished in FIRST PLACE! And STEVE WENNSTROM was the only other player to earn Grass Roots Points today! Congrats Steve! Cindy Grenville got the first and only 24-hand, so she cleaned out THE CHICKEN POT. The $10 pot for the DIRECTOR'S AWARD (crib flush) went to Ray Mielbrecht. 4 players entered to win the RAGGEDY JULIA pot, which started with $9, but nobody scored a RAGGEDY JULIA (6-7-8-A-A), so that pot begins with $13 next week. STEVE WENNSTROM has pulled back into the lead in 3rd Quarter Standings, and Mike Sudduth is the still the current leader in year-to-date standings. Two cars will be headed to Puyallup next Sunday (7:10 am ferry off the southend) to play in their National Grass Roots Tournament. If you haven't signed up yet, you can still enter, even as a walk-in on Sunday. Just show up at the ferry dock and you can hop a ride with Steve or Karen. We welcomed another off-island visitor, Jim Roseveare, today. Jim now holds our club record for the player visiting from the farthest distance (Colorado). He plays an excellent game of cribbage and has a great personality. Thanks for visiting Jim! You're always welcome to join us whenever you're in the vicinity! Jim is such a nice guy... he even let Ruth Adams win her 8th game, after her seven (7) consecutive losses. Ruth was SO close to earning her second "string-of-pearls". Oh well. You lose some....and you win some! THIRD PLACE FINISHER MISSING! Robin King dissappeared before accepting today's HUGE 3rd place trophy and winnings! (See me next week for your winnings Robin.) Jim Ranstrom game me a run for my money and finished in SECOND PLACE! Ray Mielbrecht was the first one to grab THE CHICKEN today, but lost it to Julia Bick... up until the last game, and she then surrendered it back to Ray. So Ray got the 1st AND Last 24-hand today! Nobody claimed the DIRECTOR'S AWARD, so that prize climbs to $10 next week. We're looking for that elusive CRIB FLUSH once again. And nobody claimed the RAGGEDY JULIA (6-7-8-A-A), so that pot will start out with $9 next week. For the record, Julia Bick's 55 point loss to Jim Roseveare was not a club record. You must lose by more than 62 points to earn that honor. Several close games today. Most notable were: Our visitor Jim Roseveare left Steve Wennstrom in the stink hole; Jim Ranstrom and Ray Mielbrecht both left Arlyn Teen in the stink hole; and Arlyn Teed left Ruth Adams in the stink hole. All made for some very exciting cribbage! CONGRATULATIONS to RAY MIELBRECHT! Ray earned Grass Roots Points AND took First Place today! Ray won SEVEN of his games today. Very impressive scorecard! FOUR players earned Grass Roots Points today. Ray, Mike, Cindy, and Steve! JULIA BICK was the first one to grab THE CHICKEN today, but again, that fowl quickly flew the coop, and briefly found itself in Cindy's hands, but she couldn't hang onto it, and Steve snatched it up, only to lose it in the end to me. Today's DIRECTOR'S AWARD was the Raggedy Andy (6-7-8-2-2), and it got claimed by Julia. The RAGGEDY JULIA finally got claimed today by JIM RANSTROM. That pot had grown over a three week period to $22! (See me next week for the balance ($17) of your winnings Jim.) Playing against Steve Wennstrom, JULIA BICK was holding three 5's and the Jack of the missing 5, and she swallowed hard as the turn-up card was revealed. Alas it was NOT the missing 5, which would have given Julia THE PERFECT CRIBBAGE HAND.....29! It was Julia who spoiled HARLEY MIEDEMA's "string-of-pearls" today. And the closest game of the day was between Jim and Harley, when Jim left Harley sitting in the stink hole. Ouch! And finally, although she didn't earn Grass Roots Points today, it should be noted that ARLYN TEED won over HALF of her games todays. It was much too nice today to be indoors playing cribbage, but I remind myself about all those cancer-causing rays I avoided! |
