Another interesting day at the cribbage table. Started the day with an odd number of players (as opposed to a "number of odd players"). So I called our even-handed backup support, Edith Payne, who gladly dropped what she was doing and rushed up to help us out. Well, another player showed up before Edith did, creating another imbalance. So Robin King offered to take the day off, since she had other things she could be doing. That evened us out again. But luck would have it that another player walked in right after Robin left, putting us off balance once again. And then, as promised, Edith walked in the door. So she graciously offered to leave to keep things even, and I reluctantly accepted. I'm just sorry I let two good cribbage players get away! Once play started, THE CHICKEN just sat there...and sat there...and sat there. I was afraid it would soon turn rancid, but Jim Ranstrom came to the rescue and claimed the FIRST 24-HAND and got THE CHICKEN in motion. Turned out that Jim scored the one and only 24-hand of the day. CONGRATULATIONS to Jim Ranstrom, Cindy Grenville and Steve Wennstrom for coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd (respectively). CONGRATULATIONS also to Ray Mielbrecht. He wasn't in the money, but he did earn Grass Roots points today. Must make notorious mention of Katharine Golding and Kurt Lysen, who both came within ONE (1) game of winning a "String-of-Pearls". Both very gracious in both victory and defeat! Better luck next week! Nobody scored today's DIRECTOR'S AWARD, a crib flush, so that pot will be worth $10 next week. And nobody scored a RAGGEDY JULIA (6-7-8-A-A), so that pot will start out with $8 next week

That sweet little ol' lady JULIA BICK started the day off by scoring the FIRST 24-HAND and grabbing THE CHICKEN (and $5)! Now Julia wasn't going to settle for such a small winning. Our RAGGEDY JULIA pot was vaporized today. And you know who won that hefty $78 prize. Yep! It was her namesake....JULIA BICK! So how does one top that? By earning 14 Grass Roots points and winning FIRST PLACE, of course! Congratulations Julia! I certainly couldn't top that, but I did score the only other 24-hand of the day and ended the day with THE CHICKEN (and $5), 13 Grass Roots points, AND 2nd place. Not too shabby! And STEVE WENNSTROM went home with Grass Roots points as well. Way to go Steve! The group enjoyed some tasty snacks provided by Kurt Lysen. Thanks Kurt! Also want to thank Ray Mielbrecht for hosting us at the Sportsman's Club today. Next week we will return to The Eagles. We welcomed first-time visitor KATHARINE GOLDING to our club. She seemed to enjoy herself and she is a very nice addition to our group! RAY MIELBRECHT kicked off the new season in style. First, he received a pin and certificate for earning a Grand Slam during last year's Grass Roots season. Then he sat down and got serious at the task at hand and finished today in FIRST PLACE! JULIA BICK was edged out of first place by a mere 4 spread points. CONGRATULATIONS JULIA! And KATHARINE GOLDING, in her first grass roots tournament, showed us her cribbage skill which put her in THIRD PLACE! ROBIN KING didn't finish in the money today, but she did earn 12 Grass Roots points. Way to go Robin! We had two new players join the club today. Katharine Golding and Kurt Lysen. Kurt has been playing with us over the summer. We welcome him as a club member. Another nice addition to our group! (Kurt seemed quite pleased to beat me today...by 4 points!) The FIRST 24-HAND was scored by Cindy Grenville, but she soon gave THE CHICKEN up to Katharine Golding. Katherine refused to give up THE CHICKEN and ended the day with an extra $5 in her pocket. And finally, nobody scored that elusive RAGGEDY JULIA, so that pot now stands at $70! Here are the "official" results of this "unofficial" tournament (which just means we didn't earn Grass Roots points this week) TEN (10) players participated in today's tournament: #1 Steve Wennstrom (won $40) #2 Mike Sudduth (won $20) #3 Ruth Adams (won $10) - also scored the 1st 24-hand and got THE CHICKEN and $5 #4 Cindy Grenville #5 Ray Mielbrecht #6 Arlyn Teed #7 Robin King #8 Harley Miedema #9 Roy Bumgarner #10 Jim Ranstrom - scored the last 24-hand of the day and won $5 The exciting news about today was the number of 24-hands! There were SEVEN 24-hands scored today. Ruth Adams held THREE of them! The other players included Harley, Ray, Cindy and, of course, Jim. Next week we begin our "official" cribbage season! I hope to see you then! Mike |
