The day started with Jim offering to add his own $5 prize pot, so our odds were even that much better to go home with some prize money. Jim's prize would go to the first RAGGEDY ANN of the day. I added a $5 prize pot for the first 24-HAND of the day, which Karen quickly claimed in the first round. And we had the usual $5 CHICKEN POT for the last 24-hand of the day. The CHICKEN briefly tried to lay an egg in Arlyn's lap, but Jim snatched it away and wouldn't let go of it for the rest of the day. What I found interesting was the fierceness of the ladies at the table. After losing game 1 to Steve (by a mere 15 points), Karen took her frustrations out on Julia by skunking her. Arlyn then skunked Karen, but Julia turned around and skunked Arlyn. Karen struck back and skunked Cindy. So Cindy took it out on Arlyn and skunked her in their final game of the day. All the while, Steve and Jim and I quietly racked up game points to end the day in third, second, and first place...respectively. At the end of the day everyone went home still friends, and we will sit across from one another next weekend for another fun afternoon playing one of America's favorite games...CRIBBAGE! Oh...nobody claimed Jim's RAGGEDY ANN prize, so that will roll over to next week. (THANKS for your generosity Jim!) We will have the usual $5 CHICKEN POT, AND if you are lucky enough to have ANY of these following hands, you'll get to claim a $5 prize! RAGGEDY ANDY 18 hand 22 hand 23 hand Crib Flush 4-of-a-Kind Royal Ann I have attached a paper that describes each one of these hands so you'll know what to look for next Saturday. If you can't open the file, don't worry! I'll bring a copy with me on Saturday. If it's Saturday at 1...it's CRIBBAGE at the Eagles! Mike (206) 930-1379 [email protected]

Mike I forgot to say THANK YOU to Julia for bringing Arlyn to Cribbage while Steve was out of town.
Our cribbage gatherings have become an important part of Arlyn's weekly routine, and thanks to Julia and Steve, Arlyn has one of the best attendance records this season! So THANK YOU Julia (and Steve)! Speaking of Steve, HE'S BACK! Just like in cribbage, where he has an uncanny knack of knowing your next play, Steve must also be a weather psychic. He took a nice trip down south just in time to escape the snow here. Well, THANKS for bringing back better weather with you Steve! I also want to mention that Frank Erickson became a dues paying member of our club last week. Frank is a very fine cribbage player...and a good sport, win or lose! WELCOME FranK! I thought I would share the rules around cutting the deck, (in case some of you have not already read the Rulebook from cover to cover....available online at www.cribbage.org) Cutting the deck can be one of the most foreign rules to players who never played under ACC rules before. I know it was one of the biggest mental obstacles I faced at the beginning. OK. If it's Saturday at 1...it's CRIBBAGE at the Eagles! Get your yard and house chores done early and JOIN THE FUN! Mike (206) 930-1379 [email protected] Rule 3. Cutting the Pack Rule 3.1. Procedure for Cutting the Pack a. Prior to cutting the cards to determine the first dealer of a game, each player should shuffle the pack, and the player who shuffled last must allow the opponent to cut first. b. When cutting for the first deal of a game, the first player shall remove no less than four cards and not more than half the pack. The second player shall remove no less than four cards and shall leave at least four cards. c. When cutting before each deal and for the starter card, no less than four cards shall be taken from the top and no less than four left on the bottom. Rule 3.2. Winner of the Deal a. Each player's cut card is the card at the bottom of the cards in hand, not the card on top of the remainder of the pack. The player cutting the lower-rank card deals the first hand of the game. b. If both players cut a card of equal rank, the entire pack shall be reshuffled and they shall cut again. c. If a player exposes more than one card, said player shall cut again. Rule 3.3. Cutting Before Each Deal a. A cut is required before each deal. The dealer shall place the pack on the table (board) for the pone to cut. Neither player is permitted to look at the bottom card of the top pack. Should either do so, there is a two-point penalty, and the pack shall then be reshuffled and cut again. When cutting, the cards must be taken off together; they may not be taken off individually. b. While cutting before each deal, the top pack must be placed under the bottom pack; no "middle cuts" are allowed. It is not permissible to distribute the cards from a portion of the deck. The dealer shall not look at the bottom card of the pack at any time after the cut. Should dealer do so, the pone is to remind dealer of the prohibition and score a two-point penalty. The pack shall then be reshuffled and cut again. c. Should the cut be forgotten, before the pone’s cards are picked up, the pone may remind the dealer that the cut was not offered. The pack shall then be reshuffled, and the cut made. There shall be no redeal after any of the pone’s cards are picked up. Well, we were paid yet another visit by an off-island player who took home the big prize!
Karen Dupea from Tacoma ventured all the way over to the island and left with first place. Karen had visions of scoring a Grand Slam (no losses) until she ran up against Cindy and Arlyn in her final two games. Karen Dupea got a little extra help with her ferry fare today by winning $5 for the first crib flush! Jim continues to pick our pockets in the most friendly of manners. This time he went home with second place and 12 Grass Roots points! Way to go Jim!! The CHICKEN got passed around several times today and landed in Jim's lap. Karen Keil missed earning Grass Roots points by just one point, ending the day with 11 game points. Nobody got left in the stink hole today, but Julia lost a game by just 2 points. Jim Cindy and Harley each lost one game by just 3 points. If it's Saturday at 1...it's CRIBBAGE at the Eagles! JOIN THE FUN!! Last week I experienced famine. Today it was a FEAST! In fact, Ray, Stephen, Arlyn, and Julia also feasted today! Harley, Karen, and Jim experienced the famine. If it's any consolation, Jim took the CHICKEN away from Ray (after Ray had held it for quite a while) and took home the only $5 pot of the day. Way to go Jim! Tomorrow Cindy and I will venture over to Puyallup for their National Grass Roots Tournament, where we will play 9 games in the morning and another 9 games in the afternoon. Wish us luck! (Cindy won a small cash prize at last year's tournament!) Remember, if it's Saturday at 1...it's CRIBBAGE at the Eagles! JOIN THE FUN!! Mike [email protected] (206) 930-1379 One of our more exciting cribbage tournaments (even if I did come in next to last place)!! We started the day with TEN (10) players, so we had to set up an additional table to accommodate everyone. I say the more...the merrier!! Harley took first place today, but it took a skunk on his last game to secure that position. Cindy came in second and Steve came in third, each winning 6 games and earning 14 game points, so the difference of a mere 12 points in spread was the deciding factor. Jim and Huck didn't have that shabby of a day either. They both chocked up 12 game points, qualifying them for GrassRoots points. And Arlyn missed the cutoff for GrassRoots points by 1 game point. She had a scorecard of 11 game points. So close!! Ray and Karen decided not to show off this week, although Karen did skunk two of her opponents and Ray skunked one of his. First time visitor Dan Clayton seemed to enjoy the day, despite coming in last place. He was the first to grab the CHICKEN and claim the $5 pot for the FIRST 24-HAND, and then managed to hang onto it all day, to claim another $5 pot for the LAST 24-HAND of the day. We missed Julia's presence today. She probably has the best attendance this season. We hope to see her back next week! My thanks to JIm for providing me with transportation to today's tournament. Thanks to Steve for the goodies he provided. And thanks to everyone who helped set up and take down the tables and chairs. If it's Saturday at 1...it's CRIBBAGE at the Eagles! JOIN THE FUN!!
