The highlight of today was the return of ARLYN TEED to the cribbage table! It was so nice to have her back, Arlyn expressed her appreciation for the flowers that the group sent to her to help boost her spirits. Seemed to do the trick! CONGRATULATIONS to JULIA BICK! She had an impressive 7 wins and took FIRST PLACE today! FOUR players earned Grass Roots Points today! Julia, Harley, Stephen, and Edith! Today's DIRECTOR'S AWARD, chosen by Julia Bick, required that very elusive CRIB FLUSH, but ARLYN TEEN made it seem like child's play. ROBIN KING has been crowned the CHICKEN QUEEN, as she not only scored the FIRST 24-hand, but once she got her hands on THE CHICKEN, she refused to let go of it, and won the CHICKEN POT too! Nobody claimed the RAGGEDY JULIA today. So that pot starts out with $14 next week! And as always, we were appreciative that Edith Payne stopped by and filled the tables with an even ten players! THANKS Edith!

We started the day with a quick review of some of the rules (and penalties) when playing in a tournament. When we got down to the business at hand, THE CHICKEN was quickly grabbed by RUTH ADAMS! Sadly, she let it slip out of her hands and it landed in Jim Ranstrom's hands, but he fumbled it and it ended the day in Ruth's hands once again. The DIRECTOR'S AWARD (a four of a kind) was also claimed early, by JULIA BICK! JIM RANSTROM was his usual generous self and brought the Fritos for us to munch on. To show my gratitude, I put a stop to his grand slam attempt in the sixth game (after he had five straight wins), which put the rest of his cribbage score card on the skids. THANKS JIM! :-o Six players particpated in today's RAGGEDY JULIA (6-7-8-A-A), but nobody scored one, so the pot starts with six bucks next week. RAY MIELBRECHT thoughtfully brought up a GREAT idea today! He took up a collection to buy flowers for our friend Arlyn, who is still working to get stronger so she can return to the cribbage table! THANKS RAY! (Anyone interested in contributing towards the flowers should contact Ray.) CONGRATULATIONS to CINDY GRENVILLE for her Second Place finish! (Since we only had eight players today, the cash payouts only went to 1st and 2nd place!) Next Saturday will be our 6th tournament of the 3rd quarter, which will take us to mid-quarter. We welcomed back Michael DeBlasi today. Michael is an excellent cribbage player (as evidenced below), and he's always welcome to join us. (Below Michael and Ruth square off) JIM RANSTROM topped the chart once again with an impressive scorecard 16/7/79 And as you can from the chart, Steve Wennstrom and I both earned Grass Roots points as well. (Below Steve and Robin compete) Ruth Adams was the first to grab THE CHICKEN (and $5), but she didn't hold it for long. Jim held it briefly, passing it on to Robin, who did a pass back to Jim. But RAY MIELBRECHT was the last person holding THE CHICKEN, so he received THE CHICKEN POT today, worth $5. Speaking of Ruth, today Ruth was dealt a 4-5-5-5-5-6. She smartly tossed the 4-6, but when a NINE was turned up fate robbed her of that elusive 28-hand, the second highest cribbage hand possible. Nine players participated in today's RAGGEDY JULIA. The RAGGEDY JULIA went to Roy Bumgarner today. He was the only person to score a 6-7-8-A-A, so he claimed the entire pot of $17. (Roy is the guy wearing the hat) The DIRECTOR'S AWARD was a 1-2-3-4-5, and it did get claimed, so next week's pot will be worth $5. It's OFFICIAL! We were again disappointed to learn that our friend Arlyn is still under the weather and we all wish her a speedy recovery. Ray did an admirable job of anchoring down Seat #1, but it's just not the same without Arlyn! STEVE WENNSTROM was this week's force to be reconned with. He skunked two of his opponents (both by more than 40 points.) Steve ended the day with 14 games points and FIRST PLACE! Second Place was mistakenly awarded to KAREN KEIL, when, in fact, HARLEY MIEDEMA was the rightful second place finisher. Both earned 13 Grass Roots points, and Karen's net spread was +84 (vs Harley's +31), but Harley won more games than Karen did, so Harley gets the Second Place spot. We had a 4th player today who earned Grass Roots Points. RAY MIELBRECHT. Don't spend those points all in one place Ray! The DIRECTOR'S AWARD had grown to a whopping $25, as nobody had been able to score that elusive CRIB FLUSH. Well, today RUTH ADAMS turned up the right combination of cards in her crib to claim that prize....only to turn around and get skunked by Steve. I'm not certain, but I think winning the DIRECTOR'S AWARD took most of the sting out of that skunk. THE CHICKEN took the day off (actually I forgot him at home), so we had to improvise a little for the 24-hand pot. It should be no surprize that HARLEY MIEDEMA was the first to score a 24-hand. And it turned out that he was the ONLY person to score a 24-hand, so he got both prizes. Today we started a new prize pot....the RAGGEDY JULIA. Our very own JULIA BICK had donated a very nice Raggedy Ann doll to the club, so we've named the prize pot in her honor. 8 players bought into the hand today, but nobody scored the hand (6-7-8-A-A), So next week's RAGGEDY JULIA will be worth $8 to begin with. plus however many want to buy in next week. The first person to score a Raggedy Ann will get $5. The last person to score one will receive the remainder of the pot. Many thanks to JIM RANSTROM and ROBIN KING for bringing in the goodies. |
