Results are now final, but you need to go to our old website to see the numbers www.home.comcast.net/~vashonislander/tidepool/index.htm Today we welcomed Jim Roseveare back to our club. Jim lives in Colorado, but visits the Seattle area every now and then, and he makes it a point to come over to Vashon to put in a little cribbage time with us. We all enjoyed his company today. Hurry back Jim! Today we added another new club member...Dave McCoy. Dave has been in the money in his first two tournaments. And today he finished in SECOND PLACE and earned his first Grass Roots Points. WELCOME Dave...and good luck in future tournaments! You didn’t have to earn Grass Roots Points today to be in the money. RUTH ADAMS finished in THIRD PLACE today with 10 game points. SIX players, including Ruth, had TEN game points today. The others included ROY BUMGARNER, RAY MIELBRECHT JIM RANSTROM, STEVE WENNSTROM and HARLEY MIEDEMA. So the second deciding factor is GAMES WON. Steve and Harley only won 4 games, so they were eliminated. Jim, Roy, Ray and Ruth each won FIVE of their games, so NET SPREAD POINTS was the next determining factor. Roy had five net spread points...two less than Ray. Not enough for either of them. Jim had 29 net spread points, but Ruth out-gunned him...ending the day with 32 net spread points..and THIRD PLACE! (Ruth - I’ll make sure you collect your winnings from Jim) Jim Ranstrom can’t feel too sorry for himself. He held the FIRST 24-HAND (worth $5) AND held the first (of several) crib flush (worth $10). KATHARINE GOLDING ended the day holding THE CHICKEN! (see me next week for your winnings Katharine) Nobody held a 6-7-8-A-A, so the RAGGEDY JULIA pot rolls over to next week. And finally, today I joined the esteemed company of RAY MIELBRECHT when I earned a GRAND SLAM. Ray was the only club member to hold that honor....until today!

RAY MIELBRECHT scored the FIRST 24-HAND ($5) and THE CHICKEN. EDITH PAYNE held a 6-7-8-A-A, the RAGGEDY JULIA, which was worth $80! HARLEY MIEDEMA ended the day with THE CHICKEN after taking it away for Jim Ranstrom, who had taken it away from Ray. Nobody held a CRIB FLUSH, so next week's DIRECTOR'S AWARD will be worth $10. KATHARINE GOLDING was working her way towards a string of pearls, but newcomer CORBY CHRISTENSEN broke her string in game 7. RAY MIELBRECHT robbed JIM RANSTROM of a GRAND SLAM in game 4. Then Jim robbed STEVE WENNSTROM of his own GRAND SLAM in game 5. JULIA BICK was left in the stink hole in her first game (against me), and left her opponent (Harley Miedema) in the stink hole in her last game. That last win earned her GRASS ROOTS POINTS! KURT LYSEN is not easily discouraged. He got skunked in his first and second game, then went on to win 4 of his matches today. Many thanks to EDITH PAYNE (and her husband) for donating a box of playing cards to the club! MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! The National Grass Roots Tournament in Puyallup is scheduled for April 25th. We will be carpooling again, so let me know if you plan to join us for that all-day event. Remember...you can earn Grass Roots Points at the Regional and National Grass Roots Tournaments! (CLICK HERE for a registration form) And if April 25th doesn't work for you, there are at least three other similar events happening in the area in the next two months. Check out the UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS page for details. Interesting day! 1st time we exceeded 12 players. 1st time we paid out to the top FOUR players. Might even be the 1st time we've had TWO guests. 1st time a guest scored the 1st 24-hand ($5) , claimed the DIRECTOR'S AWARD (crib flush), and finished in THIRD PLACE. Congratulations DAVE MCCOY! (Next week's DIRECTOR'S AWARD will again be the CRIB FLUSH) STEVE WENNSTROM ended the day with THE CHICKEN! Nobody claimed the RAGGEDY JULIA. (We added $12 to that pot today.) JULIA BICK finished in SECOND PLACE, despite having more spread points than the winner, and being left in the stink hole in her 9th and final game against Dave. (True story!). KATHARINE GOLDING had fewer spread points than Julia and Dave, but she won the most games, and finished in FIRST PLACE! And check out that KURT LYSEN! Finished in the money...FOURTH PLACE... and earned Grass Roots Points! GO Kurt! (You would think someone winning SIX games and earning 13 Grass Roots Points would be worth something....but not today!) I hope we'll see Dave and Corby again real soon! Interesting day! 1st 24-HAND (and $5) went to ROBIN KING Last 24-HAND, $5 and THE CHICKEN went to JIM RANSTROM DIRECTOR'S AWARD, worth $15, went to JULIA BICK. Next week's hand will be the CRIB FLUSH. And nobody claimed the RAGGEDY JULIA, so that will start out next week with $58. DO NOT ADJUST YOUR EYES! DO NOT ADJUST YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN! SIT BACK AND RELAX....AS WE ENTER....THE TWILIGHT ZONE! Look down the list below! No! Look down further! No! Look further down! See the name at the bottom of the list? Rumor has it the guy has quit the Vashon Cribbage Club...moved to Florida...and has taken up lawn bowling. "How could it come to this?" you might ask. Well, I blame it on that Nina! There I was, minding my own business, happy as a lark, holding THE CHICKEN after scoring TWO 24-hands, just five points to go...and that NINA pegs out, leaving me out in the cold. Can you believe THAT? Well it's TRUE! Scarred for life! Enough joking around! Nina was our special guest today, and she was a GREAT addition to our group! Stop in any time Nina! Once again I had to call in Special Agent EDITH PAYNE to even out the number of players today, and she was richly rewarded for her efforts with FIRST PLACE! (Ok...maybe her 1st place finish had more to do with her superior card skills, but we were glad that she was able to join us on such short notice.) REVENGE OF THE NERDS! No...STEVE WENNSTROM isn't a nerd, but he did get revenge on us. He has had a tough couple of weeks at the cribbage table, but today he turned that around and finished in SECOND PLACE! I should note that Steve and Julia Bick were TIED going into their ninth and final game, but in the end...Steve was the victor. He also ended the day holding THE CHICKEN! RAY MIELBRECHT, despite a crushing blow by Katharine Golding, managed to finish in THIRD PLACE! ROBIN KING wasn't in the money today, but she did earn Grass Roots Points! Robin also scored the FIRST 24-HAND, which got her THE CHICKEN (and $5). RUTH ADAMS just missed earning Grass Roots Points today. Ruth won over half of her games today. Looks like her luck might be turning around! Katharine Golding was the most "consistent" player today. She lost five straight games, then won four straight games. Nothing wishy-washy about Katharine! Kurt Lysen came the closest to earning a string-of-pearls today. He lost his first SIX games, before he finally whipped Jim Ranstrom. I think I have mentioned every player except Cindy Grenville. In looking over her scoresheet, I find it interesting that she played 3 of the top 4 finishers and won against 2 of them. Nobody could muster up a 23-point hand, so the DIRECTOR'S AWARD is worth $15 next week! And nobody held a 6-7-8-A-A, so the RAGGEDY JULIA pot grew by an additional $11. We continue to keep Arlyn Teed in our thoughts as she recovers from her injuries. DON'T FORGET! Next Weekend: January 10th. We are playing on SUNDAY! That's January 10th! Did you make a note of that? SUNDAY! Don't forget! Same start time: 1:00 p.m. By the way...our tournament next weekend will be our 18th tournament of the year. That will be the half way point for the cribbage season! Still LOTS more cribbage ahead of us! |
